Transforming Waste in to Value.

17th SEPTEMBER 2025

A ₹2.5 Lakh Crore Resource is Hidden in India’s Food System.

This International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, we’re focusing on what comes next. India’s 74 million tonnes of annual food waste represent a monumental economic and environmental challenge. But within that challenge lies our single greatest bio-economic asset.

Our latest scoping report, “Transforming Waste Into Value,” was developed by Thinking Forks in collaboration with Coalition for Food-Systems Transforma(c)tion in India, GIZ India, WASSANIndia, Food Future Foundation, and Welthungerhilfe (WHH). Co-led by our founder & director, Ms Rinka Banerjee, it offers the strategic blueprint to activate this asset.

We’ve moved beyond quantifying the problem, like the ₹1.52 lakh crore in post-harvest losses, to mapping the viable pathways for transformation.

The report delivers a clear-eyed analysis of:

The technological frontier: From advanced extraction to biological conversion, detailing what’s scalable in India now.
The pioneering ecosystem: The Indian startups are already proving the market, creating everything from nutrient-dense foods to biodegradable packaging from what was once discarded.
The actionable roadmap: A strategic guide for policymakers, investors, and industry leaders to build a circular food economy.
